The fact that so many in the comments are trying to say that this is a propaganda film and therefore has no value is insane. The message itself is a great one that it doesn't matter what way it was told, but being technically propaganda just so happens to be how it's told.

One of the things not allowed but done was the crazy things the engineers did, like the greasing.....we had a widget that said 15 engineers couldn't grease him...we found 25 said we could. On reps...by work party and " boot camp" get us something good....a case of 4 watermelon,one for each hole...good job boot camp.

I own the style of gas mask shown here. It is the M2 Service Mask, and it's a very cool piece to own. However, with that said, i understand why there was such a problem with guys just throwing them away, as it is a very large, bulky and heavy thing.

I tried joining as a door gunner after seeing them in Vietnam documentaries, but my POS recruiter was clueless about what mos it was. So I signed up as a combat engineer like my grandfather was when wounded in WWII. Then I got to bootcamp where I was taken to see a captain who told me that there wasn't training for combat engineers going on by the time I'd graduate bootcamp so I was now a rifleman (infantry) as well as that the contract I signed only states what I must give to my country and that you can't sue the military. That was the day I decided that a career in the military wasn't for me and began counting down to when I would be discharged.

I'm glad gas was more or less outlawed by the world. It's horrific, imagine the hospitals overwhelmed by blind and dying patients. Gas was an old war weapon, keeping and burning toxic plants was the origin. Russia sometimes uses opiates to gas positions. An underrated weapon, but with today's technology why should it have to be deadly.

I did 3 1/2 years on a Coontz class DDG which was homeported in Norfolk, VA in the late 1980's. It had its ups and downs, the sea pay added up after a while, and we did get to see some nice ports in the Med, Caribbean and North Atlantic. However, when it came time to rotate back to shore duty, I was more than ready. Those things just got too small and too confining after a few days out at sea and the routine could be very unpredictable and aggravating. I was able to run on either the lower or upper weather decks when the seas were calm, which did help me cope. To sum it up, what was your best day on the ship? The day you got OFF the ship. Later, when I was stationed in DC, I took some Army co-workers to tour the USS Barry that at the time was a museum ship at the Navy Yard. It was only a little smaller than the destroyer I was on. They couldn't believe how small and cramped the spaces were, especially the berthing areas and ship's office. After that tour it seemed that they were very glad to be in the Army and that it could never be as screwy as shipboard life. Having been in the Army prior to joining the Navy, I often said that I missed the Army a lot when I was on sea duty. Yet, the Navy's duty station locations were much better, we usually ate pretty good, and the medical care was excellent. Those white uniforms though could be a real headache to keep clean and pressed. I don't miss those much needless to say. Fair winds and following seas to all of the good friends I left behind.
